KPN Plantations is committed to water conservation for sustainable resources.
We acknowledge the critical importance of water as a vital resource. Therefore, we establish water usage standards for our mills’ operation, implemented responsible wastewater management and commited to the conservation of watersheds, springs, and peatlands.
We closely monitor water data through our Android-based platform, which includes:
- Water Management Asset Management
- Hourly Rainfall Information
- Water Level Records
Peatland Management
Since 2018, we have stopped all planting activities on peatlands across all our operational sites. Our Peatland Restoration Program focuses on the conservation and restoration of degraded peat forests, including rewetting, species enrichment, and rehabilitation following presidential regulations and ministry guidelines. Our efforts aim to prevent land fires, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure sustainable water management. We also collaborate with qualified third parties to provide technical guidance and field verification.
Management of Riparian Areas
The riparian zone acts as a buffer between natural waterways and land to prevent soil erosion, reduce surface runoff, and help protect and enhance biodiversity. We comply with local regulations and maintain riparian zones to have a width of 50 meters for small rivers and 100 meters for large rivers.
KPN Plantations strictly prohibits planting in designated river buffer zones within our operational areas. These areas are delineated and marked for our workers. Taking it a step further, replanting of indigenous local species is carried out in these areas as part of our reforestation efforts. We consistently monitor the diversity of plants and wildlife, water quality and chemical properties, as well as disturbances from illegal activities in these areas and report our findings to the authorities.
